Pensacola's vibrant theatre scene is set to shine with the return of Short Attention Span Theatre at Pensacola Little Theatre (PLT) from January 24 to February 2, 2025. This year's lineup features a series of one-act plays, including Mushy, penned by local playwright and director KG Uslan.
About KG
KG Uslan is a non-binary theatre creator and scholar hailing from Portland, Oregon. A recent graduate of Florida Southern College with a Bachelor of Arts in English: Writing and Theatre Arts, Uslan is known for crafting works that spotlight queer characters and blend avant-garde elements with intimate storytelling. Their mission is to bridge the gap between theory, performance, and social justice, bringing underrepresented narratives to the forefront of theatre.
Mushy at Short Attention Span Theatre
Mushy offers audiences a glimpse into the beginning, middle, and end of three distinct relationships. As the seasons change, characters Sophie, Mona, and Nadina embark on journeys of self-discovery, learning to embrace their authentic selves and the individuals who validate them. The play is directed by Veronica Lindholm and features a talented cast, including Nathan Simmons as Chuck, Ashley McGlothren as Nadina, Avery Gramlick as Mona, Veronica LaCroix as Kit, Armando Cruz as Jamie, and Lily-Rose Nichols as Sophie.
The origins of Mushy trace back to a Valentine's Day cabaret titled "Love Songs and Soliloquies" in February 2021, where Uslan first introduced Sophie's monologue. What began as a two-minute piece evolved into a ten-minute play and eventually blossomed into a full-length, 60-minute production. Reflecting on the play's development, Uslan shares, "Not only does Mushy reflect how I've grown over my college career, but a little piece of me is sprinkled in every single character."
Critics have praised Mushy for its relatable and heartfelt storytelling. Matt Palm of the Orlando Sentinel described the play as "down to Earth" and noted that it "will appeal to romantics."
KG Uslan's Dual Role
In addition to writing Mushy, Uslan is also directing Torrid Taxes, another piece in this year's Short Attention Span Theatre lineup. Written by Laurie Spector, Torrid Taxes unfolds on the eve of April 15, as Desiree Hofflemeister arrives at the office of CPA Chance Goldblatt, desperate to file her taxes. As the night progresses, their interaction hints at a connection that goes beyond number-crunching.
