Director, Stephen Lott

from The Director

People often come to see a production of a beloved movie expecting it to be a copy of the original. That is neither possible nor desirable. Our job is to create a new vision of this familiar tale. Like Maui, himself, the trickster and shape- shifter, things do not always appear as we thought they would but often can show a new and exciting way of looking at things.

A unique challenge of this production is that the story takes place near, on or under the water. I turned to my amazing choreographer Katelyn Geri to create a magical world of water that has many different tones that often mirrors Moana’s moods.

Her use of cloth, flags and fans combined with dance has made the Ocean one of the most important characters in this show. A great deal of the credit for this show goes to Katelyn.

More than its fun songs, and colorful characters, there are some very powerful messages in this show, including:

  • Honor your family and your past; yet be true to yourself. Don’t let your fears or the fears of others limit you.

  • It’s not what we do but who we are that defines us. Power without heart is destructive.

  • It is compassion that can heal and transform opposition instead of force.

I’ll leave you with one last observation, the design on Moana’s sail has great significance. The spiral is an ancient symbol that represents the journey inward to know and love ourselves. From that journey we return with more power and wisdom.

It is our wish that you enjoy this journey that we will take together.
