Auditions
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.”
- William Shakespeare
AUDITIONS
All auditions take place at the Little Theatre unless otherwise posted. Pensacola Little Theatre is YOUR community theatre, and auditions are open to EVERYONE. No experience is required. Reading the play is not required before an audition, although you can come to the main office and read a perusal copy of the play you are auditioning for. The perusal copy may not leave the building. Even if you have never been in a play before, don’t be shy about auditioning. During each season, we have roles of all sizes for adults, teens, and children. We encourage performers of all ethnicities, gender identities, religious backgrounds, ages, and capabilities to audition.
AUDITIONING FOR A NON-MUSICAL PLAY
All auditions are "cold-reads," unless otherwise noted, so you do not need to prepare a monologue or memorize anything in advance. Perusal copies of upcoming plays are available to read at the PLT Box Office during regular business hours.
AUDITIONING FOR A MUSICAL PLAY
Prepare 16 - 24 bars (one verse and a chorus) of a song in musical theatre style (unless otherwise indicated). Bring sheet music marked for accompaniment. If you use a .mp3, you may plug into our speaker, or bring your own (use karaoke or accompaniment tracks only). Choose a song that enhances and shows off your singing skills - usually not a song from the play for which you are auditioning. You may also be asked to take part in movement or dance auditions, where the choreographer will ask you to learn a few steps. Please no a capella auditions.
TRAIL TO OREGON!
Auditions: March 24-25, 2025
Performancses: MAY 2-11, 2025
A STUDIO 400 PRODUCTION
DIRECTED BY DENLEY MESSERLY
MUSIC DIRECTED BY ZANDER SMITH
Trail to Oregon is a lively and humorous musical that follows the misadventures of a quirky pioneer family as they journey westward along the Oregon Trail in the 19th century. Led by the bumbling but well-meaning Father, the family encounters a series of obstacles and colorful characters along the way, including bandits, buffalo stampedes, and the dreaded dysentery.
This show contains mature themes and language.
About auditions:
Prepare 16 - 24 bars (one verse and a chorus) of a song in musical theatre style (unless otherwise indicated). Please bring a track to back your song, there will be no accompanist. You may use your phone to play music through our speakers. No a cappella auditions, please.
We enthusiastically welcome individuals of all genders, races, ethnicities, and abilities to audition for any role they feel drawn to. Our production of The Trail to Oregon diverges significantly from its original inspiration and is designed to be portrayed by a diverse ensemble. Our aim is for the characters to reflect the unique identities and experiences of the actors who inhabit them. Our creative team is eager to tailor the material to celebrate the distinct talents and perspectives of each member of our cast.
Looking for:
FATHER. Leader of the Wagon Party who, throughout the show, will have to learn to face and accept responsibility for his own faults. High rock tenor voice needed, with a strong falsetto.
MOTHER. She loves her children... though it's often hard for her to show it. Has to straddle the line between discipline and nurture, especially in this trying time in her family's life.
DAUGHTER. A rebellious teenager. Fights constantly with her family, though deep down she loves them. Unsure of what she wants, she ends up riding away with the outlaw MCDOON.
SON. The family's youngest child. Has a natural curiosity to explore the world around him and an unnatural curiosity about skinny dipping. Deadpan comedic ability required.
GRAMPA. The oldest member of the party, he is living proof that not everyone ages gracefully. Out of his mind and waiting for his turn to die, he is often unpredictable and can snap at a moments notice- ESPECIALLY if you mention his ex-wife and/or a lobster named Cornwallis. Strong falsetto preferred.
MCDOON. The Bandit King. Rides the Oregon Trail in search of some "old-fashioned lovin'". So macho that it becomes almost pathetic.
ENSEMBLE. One actor who plays literally everyone else in the show. Requires strong character choices, strong improv skills, and extreme endurance.

CAMELOT
Auditions: April 21-22, 2025
PERFORMANCES: JUNE 13-29, 2025
A MAINSTAGE PRODUCTION
DIRECTED BY STEPHEN C. LOTT
MUSIC DIRECTED BY TOM BAROCO

Lerner and Loewe’s majestic Camelot brings the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table to life with an extraordinary score and a story that poignantly dramatizes the human conflict at the heart of this classic tale. Based on T.H. White’s novel, The Once and Future King, Camelot tells the story of Arthur, a young squire who becomes King after extracting the sword Excalibur from its legendary rock. This version is imagined as a traveling troupe of eight Revelers who in Story Theatre style play multiple roles use simple props to create the world of Camelot.
The musical follows Arthur from a young, ambitious, idealistic King who dreams of creating a just society to the despairing king bearing witness to his dream’s demise. Arthur’s dream is inspired by his vivacious Queen Guenevere. Together, they create a kingdom where might works at the service of right and the King serves at a round table with no head — a symbol of collaboration and unity. But just as this utopian vision starts to become reality, everything begins to unravel. When Guenevere falls in love with Arthur’s most celebrated, beloved, and loyal knight, Lancelot, they begin a romance as doomed as it is passionate. Their troubles are compounded when Arthur’s illegitimate son, Mordred, arrives on the scene. In a world of human realities, can Camelot achieve the utopia of which Arthur dreams?

AUDITION TIPS
RESEARCH. Familiarity with any musical or play is mandatory. The stage version may be very different from the movie version. Study the stage version and make sure you understand what show you’re actually auditioning for. A good place to start is the publisher’s website (they are the company that licenses the show). Search for other theatres that have produced the show, both professional and amateur.
REHEARSE. Rehearse before you show up, even if it's just in the bathroom mirror. Come warmed up and ready to create.
ARRIVE AT YOUR APPOINTMENT TIME. Auditions will be staggered by appointment times. Check here or on the Facebook event for sign ups.
DRESS TO IMPRESS. During your audition, dress like it's a job interview. When it's time to dance, please wear attire comfortable enough to move in; however, keep in mind that we are looking at how you move so please don't wear anything over-sized. Ladies need to bring jazz shoes AND character shoes, men just need jazz shoes or sneakers. We know it’s Florida, but flip flops are never OK at an audition. Your attire is the first thing we see before you even speak your name - make that first impression count!
BE HONEST. If you are only willing to play certain roles, please note it on the audition form. If you have conflicts, please note them on the audition form. Should you want to edit your audition form during auditions, you will be allowed to simply by asking the team during a break or before you leave the building. Performers that add several conflicts or drop after not being honest on their audition form are no fun. Be fun.
FOCUS. It's all about you. Focus on presenting yourself and your gift rather than worry about what the production staff is thinking. Also, don't worry about the other performers at the audition - they are just as nervous as you are. Relax and set yourself up for a good audition. Go for it!
FLEX YOUR MUSCLES. Play to your OWN strengths and gifts. Google different productions of performers making the roles their own for inspiration. When you are singing, don't be afraid to sing alternate notes or rhythms here and there as long as you make us believe in it. This is your 90-second solo-concert and we are all ears.
KEEP GOING. If your eyelash falls off, if your heels break, if you crack on a note or if you mess up a line or lyric...... just keep going. We have been in your shoes and know what auditioning feels like, but you can't start over during a real show. Let your gift shine through no matter what.
BE POLITE. Your audition starts the minute you enter the building: smile, say ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ always. Applaud and support others in the room. Put your phone away and be attentive. Please also watch what you say/post on social media before/during/after the audition. Be authentic, be fun, be fabulous.
HAVE FUN. SMILE and have fun with us! And if you aren't having fun, act. ;)
